Turn a screenshot into a clear three-step explanation

Highlight one area, add a short label and save a readable picture while keeping the useful context visible.

Decide what the picture needs to explain

A useful annotation tells the reader where to look and what to do. Before adding marks, decide which single question the picture should answer. A screenshot covered in circles can be harder to follow than the original.

Open the screenshot through File > Open and keep an untouched copy of the source. Paint.surf edits a single bitmap: applied annotations become pixels in the same picture rather than separate objects you can return to indefinitely.

Add a highlight and a short instruction

Choose a foreground color that stands apart from the screenshot. A rectangle around a control is usually clearer than painting over the control itself. Leave enough space that the outline does not cover its label.

Keep the wording short enough to read at the picture's actual size. A sample instruction such as '1. Choose the destination folder' describes the next action without restating everything already visible on screen.

  1. Choose Rectangle and its Outline only option, then draw a box around the relevant control.
  2. Choose Text and click an empty area. Enter a short numbered instruction and adjust the size while it is still being edited.
  3. Press Ctrl+Enter to apply the text. If a connector is needed, add a simple line between the label and highlighted area.

Inspect before saving

Once applied, the text is part of the bitmap; it is not a text layer you can reopen later. Use Undo immediately if its wording or placement needs another attempt. Keep longer wording in a separate note if you expect several revisions.

Return to View > 100% and check the original control label and your annotation together. If both cannot be read, move the annotation or simplify it. For several steps, use a small number of consistent labels and explain the sequence in the accompanying message as well.

Save a copy you can reopen

Choose File > Save (PNG), open the downloaded image and check that the useful context and new label are visible. PNG is a practical first choice for screenshots and sharp text edges. The download is your saved copy; the open drawing and undo history belong to the current browser session.

If clipboard pasting is unavailable, save the screenshot as an image and use File > Open. Clipboard permissions and browser support vary. A failed paste does not by itself mean that the image is damaged.
